Our democracy is under attack with immigration being used as the spearhead to undermine our civil liberties. Our community members are being captured, detained, deported, and separated from their families. As people across the U.S. prepare to head back to schools and universities, we want to share some free resources, for our film BORDERLAND | The Line Within, which are super relevant to the urgency of this moment.
BORDERLAND is available in an academic screening package that comes with an extensive, Study & Discussion Guide, perfect for use in classrooms, remote learning, and community screenings. The academic screening rights are available through our filmmaker owned cooperative New Day Films.
The Study & Discussion Guide is available as part of that package but also available FREE for anyone who would like to access it. The Guide helps viewers engage critically with the film, exploring the historical context and personal stories. It also investigates themes including borders and identity, migration and citizenship, security vs. human rights, family separation and reunification, and who is profiting from the suffering of immigrants and their families. There are suggested activities and assignments, sample questions for discussion, and more detail about the lives of the protagonists and what they reveal about larger social and political issues. Also included is a section on Mayan history and identity and why it matters in understanding immigration to the U.S. The Guide provides resources and ideas for action at a local level.

The Study & Discussion Guide was written by Dr. Giovanni Batz and Vaclav Masek. Dr. Batz, who is featured in BORDERLAND, is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Chicana and Chicano Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Vaclav Masek was born in Guatemala, and is a doctoral candidate at the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology at the University of Barcelona. He is part of the Skylight SolidariLabs team and is the Community Impact Producer for BORDERLAND.
