20 Sep Democracy Now! host Amy Goodman calls BORDERLAND | The Line Within “a masterpiece”
When Amy Goodman calls one afternoon and says, “I want you on my show tomorrow morning,” you find a way to make it happen even in the midst of a 26 city grassroots impact campaign launch of your latest documentary film. I got into a studio in Albany, New York, and one of our film’s protagonists and immigrant rights advocate, Gabriela Castañeda, was beamed in via Skype from El Paso, Texas, while Amy was in the Democracy Now! studio in New York City.
As she opened the show, Amy said, “It’s on!” meaning the war on immigrants is heating up and becoming central to the U.S. national debate, with the targeting and blatant hate mongering of Haitians in Springfield, OH. It’s everything we talk about in BORDERLAND | The Line Within and more – that there is another way of welcoming and providing for people arriving in this country.
Our appearance on Democracy Now! wrapped our first week of The Abrazos Tour. We visited Boston, MA, Hartford, CT, and then kicked off our week-long run at DCTV’s Firehouse Cinema in NYC where Amy introduced the film and moderated our Q&A on the first night of screenings.
Here’s the show:

Gabriela Castañeda, protagonist in BORDERLAND | The Line Within, and immigrant rights activist being interviewed by Amy Goodman on Democracy Now!
The Abrazos Tour continues: We’re at the AFI Latin American Film Festival tomorrow in Washington, DC with a Q&A featuring Kaxh Mura’l, protagonist and Maya-Ixhil activist, and moderated by Raul Pinto of the American Immigration Council. Then, next week we head to Houston, Austin and El Paso, TX before heading to Arizona, California and beyond. Details and tickets here.
And if you can’t be with us at one of our scheduled stops, you can host your own screening.
A war on immigrants is not the answer. It’s not only inhumane, it’s harmful to our society and to our democracy. Join us as we use BORDERLAND | The Line Within to generate conversations and actions centered on changing the narrative about immigration.
